This Course enables students who would not otherwise be able to take a programme of this level to gain a recognised qualification and strong understanding of current practice in the photographic industry
preparing them effectively for employment.
Very specific skills and techniques are taught for each assignment with these skills taken forward into subsequent assignments. Work produced is to a professional standard.
Communication with the Course Leader prior to the visit was effective with a visit date quickly arranged.

Briefs and Course schedules requested in advance were provided and on the visit day, all student work and assessment paperwork was available and well organised. The SV would like to thank the Course Leader for facilitating the visit.
The College had an AMR inspection early in 2016, the subsequent report viewed by the SV was positive in all areas noting much good practice.

Flexible Course designed to meet needs of mature students unable to attend during normal college hours. Strong industry focus with realistic assignments and focus upon current technical practice.

Tandem College runs the HNC & HND Photography Course in a unique manner. All students on the Courses are working and unable to attend a full time Course. For HNC, students attend the Course on Saturdays(fortnightly). Two students are distance learners who receive all elements of the Course online. They
receive briefings, technical and thematic instruction and feedback tutorials. The majority of teaching takes place in a photographer’s studio in East London. This provides an inspiring location for the Course.

The HND programme is new this academic year. Students on this programme attend periodically for briefings and technical workshops. All tutorials and verbal feedback are performed online using ‘Go to Meeting’.
The SV found all aspects of the Course to be very well managed by the Course Leader who has many years educational experience and an excellent understanding of the requirements of the programme. He is assisted in delivery, assessment and verification of the programme by another tutor. A professional photographer provides inspiring additional teaching and technical support.
All meetings to consider Course management and development are informal. Assessment decisions are correctly internally verified with any contentious grading decisions fully recorded.

The Course is delivered with two units paired for each assignment. This is an appropriate manner of delivery with core and theoretical units informing units which require practical outcomes. All assignment briefs viewed for the HNC and HND had been well written. They included correct unit numbers and titles and a realistic submission deadline. The strong vocational scenarios had a clear intention and were industry focussed. Briefs included learning outcomes and all assessment criteria for the units covered. Higher grading
criteria had been appropriately contextualised. All briefs were designed to enable the learning outcomes to be fully met at the correct level for the unit and for more ambitious students to reach higher levels of achievement.

All assessment records are well maintained and stored digitally on a secure server. They will be kept for a minimum of three years for auditing purposes.

This flexible programme has two enrolment points per year. All students currently studying on both the HNC and HND programmes had been correctly registered. No distinction had been made between distance learners
and those who attend the Centre. The Course Leader explained modes of attendance. Following completion of the programme, the Course Leader will submit grades and apply for certification.

HNC students met with the SV, all expressed a high level of satisfaction with their Course. The flexibility of the Course, quality of teaching and level of support provided by the Course Leader and team was much appreciated.
Some students had done a previous photography qualification before starting this Course, others had practiced amateur photography for many years. All had found the level of work challenging at the start but had felt very well supported. Additional workshops had been provided to enable those with less experience in using photoshop to reach the level necessary. Feedback at all stages of the programme both online and in face to face tutorials had been supportive with constructive criticism and much good practice shared.
Students felt that they had enjoyed a personalised learning programme and appreciated the strong industry focus of the Course.

The students feel that they are being equipped with the creative understanding and technical skills necessary for professional practice. Some are already getting paid employment as a result of doing the Course.
